Your child undergoes major changes in the first two years of life – including eating.

  • 3-4 months: Your baby learns to coordinate sucking and swallowing. At this stage, he or she needs nothing else than breast milk or infant formula.
  • 4-5 months: Your baby is still breastfed or getting its bottle. If you notice that your child is slowly becoming interested in your food, you can try offering puréed food without pieces.
  • From around 6 months: Your child wants to try everything that the grown-ups are also shoving into their mouths. You should now gradually introduce complementary foods. Let your child look at and touch their food.
  • At around 10-12 months, children want to pick up their food themselves, bring it to their mouth, suck on it, salivate small pieces and swallow. Allow them to do this!
  • In the second year of life, your child learns to eat more and more independently with his or her hands and slowly tries out a spoon and fork.
